Recently I found this little gem In Jesse's Shoes by Beverly Lewis. Allie struggles to accept her disabled brother Jesse and deal with the other children who make fun of Jesse. In the book Allie learns to not only accept Jesse but help the other children accept him. Lewis focuses on the things special needs children have in common with other children.
Attitudes towards those with disabilities are changed through understanding. Literature can be a useful tool in helping children understand difficult topics. I like how the book focuses on the similarities that all children have. Sometimes it is easy to look only at the labels or problems a child has and forget the person inside.
